COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Instructor Development course is designed to improve training skills for law enforcement officers who will present traditional department trainings and/or facilitate groups. Participants will learn how to provide instruction using practical applications and learning principles. Topics will include: Principles of Adult Learning; Research Practices and Techniques; Methods of Instruction; Testing and Evaluation; Communicating Clearly; Designing Lesson Plans, Instructional Objectives; Utilizing Training Aids; Role of the Instructor; Public Speaking; Legal Issues and CLEST Forms. This course is designed for all certified law enforcement officers.
INSTRUCTOR: Mr Michael Smith.
Mr. Smith began his law enforcement career after graduating from Mid-America Nazarene College (now University). He became a deputy sheriff in early 1975 and was so employed until the end of 1979. While employed as a sheriff’s deputy, Mr. Smith completed his Juris Doctor at the University of Kansas, School of Law in May, 1979 and was admitted to the Kansas bar later that year. After leaving the sheriff’s department, Smith entered the general practice of law in Johnson County, Kansas, and was so engaged until October, 1983. Mr. Smith served as a Supervisory Special Agent in the Little Rock office of the FBI from April, 1995 until he retired from the FBI in 2005. Prior to coming to CJI, Smith worked for almost five years at the Arkansas Department of Education’s Professional Licensure Standards Board, conducting investigations of violations of the Standards of Conduct for Arkansas Educators (teacher misconduct) and ultimately serving as chief investigator for more than two years. Smith now serves as the Assistant Director for Education and Training at CJI, having assumed that position in May, 2014.
TARGET AUDIENCE: This class is open to all certified law enforcement officers with three or more years of law enforcement experience.
