COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to prepare participants to legally, safely, and effectively conduct undercover drug investigations. Topics will include the selection process for undercover agents, planning and executing undercover operations, drug interception investigative techniques, the use of informants, building and maintaining an undercover identity, search warrants, evidence handling, effective documentation and report writing, and legal considerations. To better prepare participants to manage the dangers inherent to covert operations, particular emphasis is placed on risk management. It is suitable for both new and experienced officers currently investigating narcotics offenses, and officers anticipating drug investigative assignments in the future.
OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course, participants will be better able to:
- Identify types of undercover investigations.
- Identify factors used in selecting undercover officers.
- Develop planning strategies.
- Develop surveillance techniques.
- Recognize the value of business partnerships in drug interdiction programs.
- Use proper legal and other documentation for courtroom testimony.
- Discuss special considerations of long term operations.
