Advanced Principles of Leadership for First-Line Supervisors
CJI’s newest supervision course, Advanced Principles of Leadership for First-Line Supervisors, is a 28-hour class developed by Arkansas law enforcement supervisors. The class is designed to build the skills of law enforcement personnel who are making the transition from officer to supervisor, and those who were recently promoted.
The first offering of this class will be April 22-25 at the Criminal Justice Institute.
Instructors for this class include an impressive assortment of experienced Arkansas leaders, including Sergeant Joshua Chambliss, Undersheriff Jason Lawrence, Mr. Jeff Crow, Lieutenant Mike Welsh, Captain Heath Helton, and Dr. Sterling Claypoole.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
A comprehensive look at toxic management verses leadership will be beneficial to creating strong leaders. Motivation, and relationship building are major job functions for a law enforcement supervisor. New supervisors should know the right way to accomplish these critical tasks.
Supervisors will examine toxic leadership and the detriment it plays in an organization as compared to the benefits of being a good leader. At times, supervisors may unintentionally create and foster an environment that allows problem employees to exist. This class will explore what role supervisors play in addressing the issues of problem employees.
Supervisors will learn to teach officers how to write strong reports from a constructive standpoint without destroying the officer’s confidence and learn the best methods to schedule officers and cover shifts. They will also learn how to address employees with authority rather than sarcasm, how to use de-escalation techniques for better conflict resolution, and learn how to set boundaries for friend versus boss relationships will be discussed.
Supervisors will learn how to balance the demands of a career in law enforcement, supervision responsibilities, and family life. They will also learn how to recognize when his/her officers are stressed and how to help those in need.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
This class is ideal for those who are looking to advance in their agencies through promotional opportunities.
