DWI Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST)


The Traffic Safety Program offers the following SFST courses. Each course is available upon request, with the exception of the SFST Instructor Development Course.

DWI Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST)
This is a three-day training course that trains and certifies law enforcement officers to evaluate and administer the three part standardized field sobriety test (SFST). The training follows the nationally standardized SFST curriculum developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). Participants for this course must be law enforcement officers employed under the direct control of a public criminal justice agency.

Traffic Occupant Protection Strategies (TOPS)
This is a four to eight hour course that teaches law enforcement officers about the safety of vehicle drivers and occupants through the use of seat belts, child safety seats, and supplemental restraint systems. Participants for this course must be law enforcement officers responsible for traffic enforcement, public safety education, and those actively involved with Selective Traffic Enforcement Programs (STEP).

Drugged Driving (DD)
This is a four to eight hour course that educates law enforcement officer in identifying drivers who may be impaired by a substance other than alcohol. This course will not qualify law enforcement officers to perform functions of a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). Participants for this course must be law enforcement officers employed under the direct control of a public criminal justice agency.

SFST Refresher
This is a four to eight hour course that helps law enforcement officers improve the overall consistency of administration of the SFST test battery. The course includes providing up to date information regarding curriculum revisions and current case law. Participants for this course must be law enforcement officers who have successfully completed the NHTSA/IACP approved SFST training course.

SFST Instructor Development
This is a forty hour course that prepares SFST trained officers to teach law enforcement officers the nationally standardized SFST curriculum developed by the NHTSA/IACP and how to properly administer and interpret the SFST. Participants for this course must have successfully completed the NHTSA/IACP approved SFST training course and have had experience in administering the SFST battery. Other prerequisites may apply.
